Course Descriptions

Advanced Television Broadcasting:

Advanced TV Broacasting is a project based course designed to prepare team members for careers in the TV Broadcasting industry and for post-secondary study in the mass communications field. Team members in this course work with storyboarding, scripting, multi-camera production, editing, lighting and audio equipment.

Possible Careers: Director, Editor, Lighting Director, News Anchor, Producer, Videographer

Prerequisite: TV Production I or Satellite Center facilitator recommendation


Culinary Arts:

The Culinary Arts work center, using the National Restaurant Association's ProStart curriculum, professional consultants, and a modern commercial kitchen, immerses team members in real world foodservice experience by catering banquets and parties for interested community members.

Possible Careers: Chef, Restaurant Manager, Caterer, Restaurant owner, Dietician/nutritionist

Prerequisite: No prerequisites or course requirements


Digital Media:

Digital Media prepares team members for careers in the digital arts field and post-secondary study by working with clients, utilizing project based learning, and using tools, resources, and methods that are found in the field.

Possible Careers: Graphic Designer, Animator, Multimedia designer, Art Director, Illustrator, Desktop Publisher, Pre-Flight Operator, Photographer, Game Designer

Prerequisite: (one of the following) Art II, Webmastering I/II, Multimedia Productions, Digital Graphics, or Satellite Center facilitator recommendation


Engineering Design:

Engineering Design is intended to introduce team members to the field of engineering and engineering design. This course provides an overview of engineering principles and practices that are emphasized through hands-on experiences in a wide range of engineering technologies using industrual quality equipment and software. Physics is also taken in this course.

Possible Careers: Architectural Engineer, Civil Engineer, Chemical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Industrial Engineer, Mechanical Engineer

Prerequisite: Advanced Math and offered to seniors only


Health Care Exploration:

Health Career Exploration is a Hands-on approach to exploring different career options in the health field and the skills that go along with the different careers.

Possible Careers: Athletic Trainer, Dental Hygienist, Dietician, Geriatric Aide, Home Health Care, LPN, Music Therapist, Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Optometrist, Paramedic, Pharmacist, Physician, Therapist, Physician, Radiologic Technologist, Recreational Therapist, Respiratory Therapy, Social Worker, Surgical Technician, Veterinarian

Prerequisite: No prerequisites or course requirements


Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism (HRT) Administration:

The HRT Administration course celebrates the joie de vivre of New Orleans and explores the local culture of Southeast Louisiana while allowing team members to experience firsthand the exciting careers that can be found in the hospitality and tourism industry. This course lays the foundation to be successful in general business administration.

Possible Careers: Event Planning, Hotel Management, Marketing and Sales, Convention Services, Destination Management, Tour Guide, Travel Agent, etc...

Prerequisite: Complete an HRT Application, letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or extracurricular club sponsor.


Interactive Media:

Interactive Media prepares team members for one of fastest growing and evolving careers in the job market today, the interactive media/design field. Team Members will take part in real, client related projects that use tools, resources and methods found in the field to prepare team members for the interactive media field and post-secondary study. These projects integrate the elements of audio, video, still images, animation, text and data for the delivery of interactive content.

*Interactive Media team members also have the opportunity to work for WebQuil (the parish website maintenance project) as a paid intern.

Possible Careers: Web Administrator, Programmer, Web Programmer, Interface Website Designer, Streaming Video Administrator, Graphic Designer, Social Media Manager, Interactive Systems Designer, Mobile Application Designer, Animator, Multimedia Designer, Desktop Publisher, Photographer, Game Designer

Prerequisite: (one of the following) Art II, Webmastering I/II, Multimedia Productions, Digital Graphics, or Satellite Center facilitator recommendation


Patient Care:

Patient Care is developing knowledge, skills and critical thinking of future patient care providers through practical experiences including certification as a First Responder.

Possible Careers: Doctor, Nurse, EMT, Ultrasound Technologist, Respiratory Therapist

Prerequisite: No prerequisites or course requirements


Process Technology (PTEC):

PTEC prepares team members for the duties and responsibilities of monitoring and controlling process variables and all equipment involved in the process industries. Team members are informed on all aspects of how safety is maintained in the process industries such as: types of hazards and their effects, personal protection equipment, emergency response, and government regulations.

Possible Careers: Process Operator, Process Technician

Prerequisite: Offered to seniors only; should have taken or currently enrolled in Chemistry I, Physics, Physics of Technology, or have a recommendation from a science teacher


Students Teaching And Reaching (STAR):

The STAR course is designed to offer students the opportunity to explore the varied field of education through active engagement and real-life teaching experiences. Team members will be exposed to learning theories, teaching methodology, and educational pedagogy while learning about the history of education, child development, lesson design, and educational philosophy. Team members will put theory to practice while developing a reflective disposition. Successful completion of the course will earn STAR team members articulated credit with most Louisiana colleges and universities.

Possible Careers: Teacher, Day Care Owner, Coach, Child Psychologist, Corporate Trainer, School Councilor, Teacher (regular education and special education)

Prerequisite: Three letters of recommendation from previous high school teachers and completion of STAR application
